The grossing technician will be responsible for examining and processing formalin-fixed human tissue specimens in a medical laboratory. This person must be highly organized and conscientious at all times.

Knowledge and Skills: Must have typing skills, medical terminology helpful, personal communication skills are imperative and willingness to learn basic lab policies and protocol.

Areas of responsibility will include, but not limited to:

  1. 1. Grossly examine and process tissue specimens.
  2. 2. Carefully input examination and analysis data into laboratory information system.
  3. 3. Other duties may include:
    1. a. Responsible for specimen pick up from ASC and assisting in accessioning of cases.
    2. b. Comply with all safety and regulatory policies
    3. c. Routine handling of biohazard and/or chemical hazardous material.
    4. d. Assisting with changing chemical solutions in processors and strainers.
    5. e. Organize and deliver slides to the pathologist.
    6. f. Maintain, troubleshoot and running of non-complex automated equipment.
    7. g. Filing away pathology slides, blocks, and requisitions in an appropriate manner.
    8. h. Storing of slides and blocks in short and long term storage.
    9. i. Organizing of supplies delivered to the lab.
    10. j. All other duties as needed.

    Education:

    1. 1. High school graduate
    2. 2. Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR
      1. a. At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either:
        1. i. 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR
        2. ii. 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
          1. 1. Six semester hours of chemistry;
          2. 2. Six semester hours of biology; and
          3. 3. Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
