The grossing technician will be responsible for examining and processing formalin-fixed human tissue specimens in a medical laboratory. This person must be highly organized and conscientious at all times.
Knowledge and Skills: Must have typing skills, medical terminology helpful, personal communication skills are imperative and willingness to learn basic lab policies and protocol.
Areas of responsibility will include, but not limited to:
- 1. Grossly examine and process tissue specimens.
- 2. Carefully input examination and analysis data into laboratory information system.
- 3. Other duties may include:
- a. Responsible for specimen pick up from ASC and assisting in accessioning of cases.
- b. Comply with all safety and regulatory policies
- c. Routine handling of biohazard and/or chemical hazardous material.
- d. Assisting with changing chemical solutions in processors and strainers.
- e. Organize and deliver slides to the pathologist.
- f. Maintain, troubleshoot and running of non-complex automated equipment.
- g. Filing away pathology slides, blocks, and requisitions in an appropriate manner.
- h. Storing of slides and blocks in short and long term storage.
- i. Organizing of supplies delivered to the lab.
- j. All other duties as needed.
Education:
- 1. High school graduate
- 2. Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR
- a. At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either:
- i. 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR
- ii. 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
- 1. Six semester hours of chemistry;
- 2. Six semester hours of biology; and
- 3. Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
